Swami Atmanand Government English Medium Model College, Bilaspur (C.G.) is a part of the Swami Atmanand English Medium Model Colleges, an ambitious initiative by the Higher Education Department, Government of Chhattisgarh. About Swami Atmanand Ji
Swami Atmanand ji is revered as one of the greatest social transformation leaders of Chhattisgarh who spent his entire life in the service of humanity. He lit the flame of knowledge in the young minds making them learn about compassion and serving the society.He was born on October 6, 1929, in Barbanda village, Raipur district.
His parents were Bhagwati Devi and Dhaniram Verma, a school teacher. He was the eldest of five brothers and one sister. His early life was marked by a close association with Mahatma Gandhi during his time in Sevagram, where his father was posted. He displayed a remarkable aptitude for music and spirituality from a young age, learning to play the harmonium and sing bhajans by the age of four.
He Post Graduated in M.Sc.( Mathematics) with First Division, while following his friends advice he even opted for the IAS exam and came in the top 10 highest scoring candidates but keeping in mind his zeal for selfless service towards humanity, he didn’t appear for the interview.He joined the Ramakrishna Order and received spiritual initiation (mantra diksha) from Swami Vijnanananda in 1938. He joined the Ramakrishna Order at Belur Math on January 3, 1941. He received Brahmacharya vows in 1945 and Sannyasa vows in 1949, taking the name Swami Atmanand.
Swami Atmanand is particularly remembered for his work in youth empowerment and for his selfless dedication to helping the people of Chhattisgarh, including providing food, shelter, and education to refugees from Bangladesh. The Swami Atmanand English Medium College scheme, launched in his honour, aims to provide quality English-medium education to economically weaker sections of society.
